The Garden classes at Billings Forge offer kids the opportunity to get their hands dirty and learn values which help build a humane and sustainable future for all of us. Under the supervision of our staff and volunteers, kids carefully tend the garden all summer long by weeding, watering, and harvesting the produce they grow together. Once the food is harvested we bring it to our commercial kitchen. There, under the supervision of our Chef Julie Carrion, they prepare and eat delicious, nutritious, seasonal dishes made from what they themselves have grown. This experience has proven successful in getting kids to experiment and try vegetables that they might have never had the opportunity or desire to eat. The end product of this program is the chance to cultivate healthy eating habits at an early age that impact and individual’s health and wellness into adulthood.
