Our edible community garden complements our other initiatives and reinforces our deeper commitment to sustainable agriculture and the local food movement within an urban environment. 47 garden beds measuring 12' x 4' were built by volunteers using donated materials, and are now harvested and maintained by community volunteers and the families living onsite. Ten of these beds are available exclusively to residents of Billings Forge. Over the course of each spring, three separate plantings take place, with the majority of our plants grown from seeds. We follow organic farming practices and are proud to harvest more than 500 pounds of produce annually. The Garden provides herbs, flowers, and produce for use in the Firebox restaurant, in The Kitchen and Café, and in cooking classes. The Garden creates learning opportunities in Earth Science and Math, and is a valuable tool to convey lessons about hard work within a context of recreation, exercise, and community spirit.
